Improving your writing skills: Weekly blogs
You learn by doing and practising. That's why a weblog is being used for the minor ASIS European Union Policy to improve your writing skills. By writing your own bi-weekly blog you will gradually improve your own writing skills and assess those of your fellow students. After twelve weeks of practising you will be able to write a good argumentative essay.
Procedure:
First a brief step by step approach will help you set up your own blog, next you will write a number of writing assignments and publish them on your blog and finally you will give comment on the work of the other bloggers from EUP. Easy does it, just follow the instructions below.
1. Setting up your own weblog
- Go to www.blogger.com
- select 'language', choose English
- follow the instructions: create an account, name your blog and choose a
template. Fill in the necessary information and you will have finished
creating your blog in a few minutes. It's up to you to make your blog as
simple as can be or pimp it in any way you like.
2. Blog address
You will be given a blog address. Mail this to your teacher who will list all addresses on Blackboard.
3. Bi-weekly writing assignments
Each two weeks a writing assignment is published on Blackboard. As time progresses, the assignments will become more complicated. In this way you will have had plenty of practice to write a perfect argumentative essay to finish your debating course successfully.
4. Bi-weekly comment on the blogs of two fellow students
Next to writing your own work you will assess the writing of your fellow students regularly. Give feedback on the blogs of two fellow students. As there are plenty of students participating in this course, you should give feedback to at least 15 of them. What kind of comment should be included?
- Do you agree/disagree with the author? And why?
- What is your opinion of the article? Clear/unclear? etc. Maybe add some facts or ideas.
- Content: is the message clear, have most things been included?
- Structure: well/badly-structured, clear introduction, separate paragraphs, conclusion; is information given in a logical way?
- Style: Informal/formal (depends on the assignment)
- Grammar: point out grave mistakes/typos etc. give suggestions
- Anything you would like to add.
- Length of your comment: a maximum of 150 words
- Remember: mind your language, it may be informal, yet decent.
Your lecturer will give bi-weekly comments to two (or three) students. Your blogs (without comment from fellow students) should be printed and filed in the dossier of your individual portfolio. Your weekly comments should also be kept there.
